What is Midjourney
Midjourney is a generative artificial intelligence program and service created and hosted by the independent research lab, Midjourney, Inc., based in San Francisco. Similar to OpenAI’s DALL-E and Stable Diffusion, Midjourney can generate images based on natural language descriptions, known as “prompts”. The tool is currently in public testing, having entered this phase on July 12, 2022. The Midjourney team is led by David Holz, co-founder of Leap Motion. In August 2022, Holz told The Register that the company was already profitable. Users interact with Midjourney to create art pieces using Discord bot commands.
Midjourney, Inc. was founded by David Holz in San Francisco, California, who was a co-founder of Leap Motion. The Midjourney image generation platform first entered public testing on July 12, 2022. However, on March 14, 2022, the Discord server was launched and requests were made to post high-quality photos on Twitter/Reddit for system training.
The company has been working hard to improve its algorithms, releasing new model versions every few months. Their algorithm version 2 was released in April 2022, and version 3 on July 25. On November 5, 2022, the alpha iteration of version 4 was released to users, and on March 15, 2023, the alpha iteration of version 5 was released. The 5.1 version of the model is more “subjective” than version 5, applying more of its own stylization to the images, while the 5.1 RAW model adds improvements while better handling more direct prompts.
Midjourney can currently only be accessed via their official Discord server’s Discord bot, by directly sending messages to the bot, or by inviting the bot to third-party servers. To generate images, users use the /imagine command and enter a prompt; the bot then returns four images. Users can then choose the image they want to enlarge. Midjourney is also developing a web interface.
Founder David Holz has stated that he sees artists as customers of Midjourney, not competitors. Holz told The Register that artists use Midjourney to quickly prototype art concepts to show clients before starting work. Some artists have accused Midjourney of devaluing original creative works by using them in the training set; Midjourney’s terms of service include a DMCA takedown policy, allowing artists to request the removal of their works from the collection if they believe there is copyright infringement.
The advertising industry has quickly embraced AI tools like Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion. These tools allow advertisers to quickly create original content and brainstorm ideas, providing them with new opportunities, such as “personalized ads, new ways of creating special effects, and even making e-commerce ads more efficient”.
